A RETREAT FOR YOU and your family

The Spirit of the Retreat

After many years of requests from our community, we are opening the doors to Shambala’s very first family retreat: a soulful summer gathering where parents and children can slow down, play, rest, and reconnect together.

Set deep in the Swedish forest, surrounded by lakes, barefoot grass, and endless nature, this retreat invites you to step out of the intensity of everyday life and into a softer rhythm, one filled with yoga, creativity, laughter, stillness, and meaningful shared moments.

We’ve thoughtfully designed the experience so that both parents and children feel nourished throughout the week. While your child enjoys playful, guided activities with other kids, you’ll also have time for your own yoga practice, rest, sauna, swimming, or simply breathing deeply in nature. Throughout the retreat, families come back together for special experiences that foster connection, joy, and presence.

This is a chance to experience family life in a more spacious and grounded way — away from schedules, overstimulation, and daily demands. A place where parents can soften, children can flourish, and simple moments become memorable.

Through yoga, creativity, music, movement, nature, and shared rituals, we create an atmosphere that encourages presence, ease, and authentic connection between generations.

Your kids’s days may include activities in our lake-side Mongolian Yurt such as: kids yoga, painting workshops and singing circles, as well as forest adventures, nature nest building, singing circles, shared meals, lake swims, and evenings around the bonfire beneath the summer sky.

Whether you come to deeply rest, reconnect as a family, or simply enjoy a holiday where everything is lovingly taken care of for you, this gathering offers a warm, welcoming, and heart-opening experience for all ages.

YOUR GUIDES

Johan Svanborg and Jenny Janaki

Jenny and Johan met in Bali ten years ago, and since then have woven their lives together in service of a higher spiritual purpose — holding retreats, offering treatments, and diving deeply into spiritual studies.

Four years ago, they welcomed their daughter, Prema. Together as a family, guided by Aware Parenting, they continue to discover what it means to live in a sacred, embodied way.

During the retreat, Jenny and Johan will gently hold the space for the parents and overall family experience. Jenny will guide the morning yoga classes as well as the Mother & Father Circles, while together they will lead the nourishing afternoon parent sessions designed for rest, reflection, and authentic connection. Johan will also share his love for devotional music through heart-opening Kirtan gatherings, creating moments of joy, presence, and community throughout the retreat.

YOUR KIDS GUIDE

Fillip Agoo

Filip Agoo is a photographer, artist, and founder of Happy Hearts. He began his journey in advertising and commercial photography, but gradually chose to direct his creativity toward art, children, and positive social change.

Through the Human Alphabet project, he has created large-scale art together with thousands of children around the world. His work explores how nature, creativity, gratitude, and kindness can help both children and adults find greater presence, joy, and connection with themselves, each other, and the world around us.

During the retreat, Filip will guide one of the daily children’s gatherings, creating a playful and heart-centered space where kids can explore creativity, imagination, nature, and connection. Through activities such as circles of kindness, creative visual exercises, forest nest building, games, and playful group experiences, children are invited to express themselves freely, build confidence, and enjoy meaningful moments together in nature.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Frequently Asked Questions

Since we are a international retreat center, we will teach in English, but we’ll do our best to adapt to Swedish-speaking children wherever we can.

Yes, the sauna will be open for children from 17:00 – 18:00.

There is no shallow natural beach area directly at Shambala’s lake, and children should always be supervised by their parents around the water. For confident swimmers, the lake is a beautiful place to swim and enjoy nature.

For younger children, we are also planning to create a small sandy play area by the lake where little ones can safely enjoy the water’s edge and play nearby. In addition, there is a neighbouring lake with a child-friendly beach area perfect for families with smaller children.

Yes, we will provide special kids food.

The journey from Arlanda to Shambala (Skinnskatteberg Station) takes around 3 hours and is quite straightforward. You can search for and purchase tickets at www.sj.se.

Please note that the full train schedule is usually available only 2–3 weeks before your intended travel date, so there’s no need to book earlier than that. There are several route options.

As there are no direct trains, you’ll need to take a combination of trains and/or buses. Once you arrive at Skinnskatteberg Station, we’ll pick you up — it’s just a 7-minute drive to Shambala.

Comfortable yoga clothing, a warm layer for the evenings, earplugs and an eye mask for the bright summer mornings, sturdy shoes for forest walks, and a journal if you enjoy writing. Yoga mats and props are provided. Swimwear for the sauna is optional. We’ll send a full packing list after booking.

Our kitchen is designed to avoid the most common allergens. That said, please let us know in advance if you have any food allergies or specific dietary needs, and we’ll take them into account when planning the menu.

For guests with multiple allergies, we offer a simple daily meal option of steamed vegetables and boiled rice.

While we aim to keep our kitchen as gluten-free as possible, trace amounts of gluten may still be present. Our meals are generally suitable for those with gluten intolerance, but we cannot guarantee the absence of cross-contamination for guests with celiac disease.

At Shambala, beyond being a retreat space, we cultivate a way of living deeply rooted in the yogic values of simplicity, presence, community, and connection with nature. Rather than luxury, what we offer is warmth, authenticity, and a sense of belonging.

For this family retreat, we offer a variety of accommodation options designed to suit different family needs and rhythms. These include twin rooms ideal for one parent with an older child, triple rooms, and larger four-bed family rooms for bigger families. For parents arriving with babies or younger children who may wake during the night, we also have separate private huts offering a little more quiet and privacy.

For guests who enjoy a closer connection to nature, there is plenty of space for camping and camper vans. We also offer spacious glamping tents overlooking the lake, ideal for adventurous parents wanting to share a cosy experience with their child in a comfortable double bed, with heating, lighting, and easy access to nearby showers and toilets.

All accommodation options have access to shared showers and bathrooms.

We love animals, but as some guests have allergies, we’re unable to allow animals inside the buildings. For this reason, we kindly discourage guests from bringing their pets.
